Resilient flooring must be installed over the proper substrate (i.e. subfloor, subwall eg
existing hard surface). Inform and discuss the specific type of substrate with your
professional installer.
Suitable and Unsuitable Substrates
Suitable Subfloors: All subfloors that are structurally sound and free of excessive
movement are suitable for resilient installation. They include:
- Concrete
- Terrazzo or natural stone
- Ceramic Tile
- Non-cushioned vinyl and linoleum
- Cement backer-board
- Double-layered plywood (exterior grade)
Unsuitable Subfloors: These are not suitable because they tend to flex, expand, contract
or wrap. These subfloors must be replaced or covered with suitable underlayment prior to resilient
installation:
- Cushioned vinyl
- Perimeter installed vinyl
- Single layer plywood
- Flake board
- Particle board
- Chip board
- Stripwood
- Luan plywood
All new concrete subfloors must cure a minimum of 28 days prior to installing vinyl flooring.
Pre-Installation Procedures
- Remove all doors.
- Remove all moldings.
- Complete all painting prior to installation.
- Empty rooms completely.
- Disconnect all electrical components.

If installation requires preparing the substrate, cover all
furnishings to protect from sanding and dust.
